Mahmoud Abdel Hakam was a respected and influential Quran reciter from Egypt, known for his soulful and humble voice that touched the hearts of listeners. Born on February 1, 1915, in a small village in Egypt’s Qena Governorate, he began learning the Quran at an early age in the Maktab (traditional Quran school) of his village. To strengthen his Quranic knowledge, his father sent him to the Ahmadi Quran Institute in Tanta, where he studied Tajweed and proper recitation. He later joined the prestigious Al-Azhar Islamic Center, a milestone that helped shape his journey as a renowned Qari. He became one of Egypt’s most well-known Quran reciters, admired not just in his home country but across the Arab and Muslim world. He had a unique recitation style and avoided imitating other Qaris, choosing instead to maintain his own distinct and heartfelt delivery. His dedication to accurate recitation and deep love for the Quran made him a role model for many aspiring reciters. In 1940, he joined hands with great Qaris like Sheikh Mohamed Rif’at, Sheikh Ali Mahmoud, and Sheikh al-Saifi to establish the Association of Egyptian Quran Reciters. He served as the association’s first treasurer, working tirelessly to promote and protect the art of Quranic recitation in Egypt and beyond. Throughout his life, He traveled across many countries, reciting the Quran and sharing its beauty with people from different cultures. His recitation career spanned over 37 years, during which he became a symbol of piety and devotion to the Holy Book. He passed away on September 13, 1982, marking the memory of a man who spent his life in service to the Quran. He left behind eight children, and two of his daughters were married to the sons of another legendary Qari, Mohamed Siddiq Minshawi, further linking two great Quranic legacies. His voice and efforts continue to inspire generations of Quran lovers and reciters around the world.
