Abdul Rahman Ibn Abdul Aziz Al-Sudais is one of the most famous Quran reciters and Islamic figures in the world. He was born in 1961 in the city of Qassim, Saudi Arabia, and belongs to the respected Anza (Anazzah) tribe. Known globally for his powerful, emotional, and heart-touching recitation, he serves as the Chief Imam and Khateeb of Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah and is also the President of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.
He memorized the Holy Quran at the young age of twelve. He completed his early education at Al Muthana Bin Harith Elementary School and graduated with excellent grades from the Riyadh Scientific Institution in 1979. He continued his higher studies at Riyadh University (now King Saud University), earning a degree in Sharia in 1983. He later received a Master’s degree from Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in 1987, followed by a Ph.D. in Islamic Sharia from Umm al-Qura University in 1995, where he also served as a teacher in the Faculty of Sharia.
He became an imam of Masjid Al-Haram in 1984 at only 22 years old, delivering his first khutbah that same year. His voice soon became one of the most recognized in the Muslim world, admired for its deep emotion, precise Tajweed, and spiritually uplifting tone. He has led thousands of prayers, including Taraweeh, often alongside Sheikh Saud Al-Shuraim, with whom he became famously known as the “Twins of the Haram.”
His dedication to Islamic scholarship and Quranic recitation has earned him several honors. In 2005, he was awarded the Islamic Personality of the Year at the Dubai International Holy Quran Award. In 2016, he was personally appointed by King Salman to deliver the prestigious Hajj Khutbah at Arafat, one of the highest responsibilities in the Muslim world.
Beyond his role as an imam, he plays a central part in overseeing the major expansion projects of both Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid An-Nabawi in Madinah. His administrative leadership continues to shape the development and services of the Two Holy Mosques for millions of pilgrims. He has also traveled to countries such as India, Pakistan, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom, participating in conferences and promoting peaceful Islamic teachings.
Together with Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, several well-known Qur’an reciters have helped shape the spiritual sound of modern Islamic recitation. Among them are Maher Al Mueaqly, Abdullah Ali Jabir, Sahl Yaseen, Khalid AL Mohanna, Abdullah Khulaifi, Abdul Basit ‘Abd us-Samad, Mishary Rashid Alafasy, and Abdul-Munim Abdul-Mubdi, whose unique voices continue to inspire listeners around the world.
He is admired not only for his recitation but also for his efforts to promote moderation, harmony, and interfaith dialogue.
