Abdullah Khayat, also known as Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Abdul-Ghani Khayat, was a respected Quran reciter, scholar, and imam from Makkah, Saudi Arabia. He was born in 1326 Hijrah (1908) and memorized the Quran at a very young age. From his early years, he showed a deep interest in Islamic knowledge and studied under some of the most prominent scholars of his time, including Sheikh Abdullah Ibn Hassan Al-Sheikh, Abdu Daher Mohamed Abu Samh, and Sheikh Mohamed Abdurrazik Hamza.
In 1941 Hijrah, he graduated from the Saudi Scientific Institute, and by 1947 Hijrah he was appointed as an imam of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. His beautiful voice and precise recitation quickly gained attention, and his Quran recitations were broadcast on Saudi official TV and radio, reaching millions of listeners across the Muslim world.
Besides his role as an imam, he was also a distinguished theologian and writer. He published several important works that contributed greatly to Islamic thought and the intellectual movement of his time. He also served as a member of the Master Theologians Instance, further highlighting his scholarly standing.
Due to health issues, he later requested to be exempted from his duties as imam. Despite this, his recitations and literary contributions left a lasting impact on the Muslim world.
The voice of Abdullah Khayat remains a source of peace for many, keeping his memory alive through his recitations. Other reciters, including Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, Saad Al Ghamidi, Yasser Al-Dosari, Abdullah Al-Johany, Idrees Abkar, AbdulKareem Al Hazmi,Ibrahim AL Asiri, Raed Mohamed, and Mukhtar Al Haaj, share the same mission of spreading the Quran’s beauty.
He passed away in Sha’ban, 1415 Hijrah (1995), leaving behind a legacy of scholarship, beautiful Quran recitation, and dedication to Islamic knowledge.
