Abdullah Al-Khulaifi was a highly respected Quran reciter and Imam from Saudi Arabia, known for his powerful, emotional, and heart-touching recitations. He was born in Al-Bukairiya in 1333 Hijri (1915 CE) and grew up in a home devoted to Islamic learning. His father was a well-known scholar, judge, and leader of the city, and this environment nurtured his love for the Quran from an early age.
He memorized the Holy Quran before the age of 15 and began his journey as an Imam at the mosque in Abu Koiliya, assisting his father. Later, he moved to Namra Mosque, where his calm and soulful recitation attracted many worshippers. His reputation spread quickly, and King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz personally invited him to lead prayers in Taif. In 1365 Hijri, he was appointed as the Imam and Khateeb of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, one of the greatest honors for any reciter.
He was among the first to lead Tahajjud prayers during the last ten nights of Ramadan in Masjid al-Haram, a tradition that continues to this day. Over nearly 50 years of service, he guided worshippers with deep humility, spirituality, and devotion. His peaceful and emotional recitation, especially of the verse “Allahu noorus-samaawaati wal-ard” (Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth), remains deeply remembered by Muslims, particularly during Ramadan.
Along with Abdullah Khulaifi, many other respected Qur’an reciters, including Emad Al Mansary, Salah Albudair, Abdullah Khayat, AbdulKareem Al Hazmi, Waleed Al Shamsan, Mahmood Ali Al Banna, Abdul Basit ‘Abd us-Samad, Mansour Al Salimi, and Mahmood Al rifai, have also inspired listeners worldwide with their heartfelt and precise recitations, enriching the spiritual experience of Qur’anic listening.
He passed away on Monday, 28 Dhul-Hijjah 1414 Hijri (1994 CE), shortly before Maghrib. His funeral prayer was held the next day at Masjid al-Haram, where he had spent most of his life leading prayers. He was buried in the Al-Adl Cemetery in Makkah.
