Adil Al-Kalbani (full name: Adil Ibn Saalim Ibn Saeed Al-Kalbani) is one of the most respected Quran reciters and Imams in the Islamic world. He was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 1378 AH (1959 CE), on the 25th of Ramadan, which fell on a Friday. His journey from humble beginnings to becoming the first Afro-Saudi Imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca is a remarkable story of faith, perseverance, and dedication.
His first teacher in Islamic studies was Shaykh Hasan Ibn Gaanim Al-Gaanim, head of the Department of Knowledge Propagation, Fatwas, and Guidance. Under his mentorship, he studied parts of Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sunan At-Tirmidhi, and Tafsir Ibn Kathir. He also learned from Shaykh Dr. Mustafa Muslim at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, Shaykh Abdul Rahman Ibn Jibreen, and Shaykh Ahmad Mustafa, gaining certification in the ten Qira’at (readings) of the Holy Quran.
Before his historic appointment in 1429 AH (2008 CE) as an Imam of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Adil Al-Kalbani served for 25 years as Imam at King Khalid Ibn Abdulaziz Mosque in Riyadh and led prayers in many other mosques. His appointment to lead the Tarawih prayers in the Grand Mosque marked a historic moment, symbolizing Islam’s message of equality and brotherhood.
He is admired worldwide for his deep, resonant voice and heartfelt recitation.
