Ali Hajjaj Al Souissi was a famous Quran reciter from Egypt, born in Cairo in 1926. Coming from a respected family, his father was the head of the Shari’a court in Cairo. He memorized the Holy Quran by the age of ten under the guidance of Sheikh Abou Aziz Al Sahaar, a well-known Azhari scholar. Later, he continued his Quranic journey at Fadel Bacha Mosque in Darb Al Jamames under the mentorship of the legendary Sheikh Muhammad Refaat, who played a big role in shaping his mastery of Tajweed.
In 1946, he joined the Egyptian Radio and quickly became known for his powerful and emotional recitations. He also studied at the Institute of Arabic Music, where he learned music theory and mastered Maqam Al-Saba, a style that made his voice stand out. Because of his strong and melodious voice, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Harbi described him as the “strong throat holder” in Quran recitation.
He traveled internationally and visited the London Central Mosque several times during Ramadan, where his recitations left a deep impact on listeners. In recognition of his contributions, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak honored him with the Order of Distinction in 1989.
Ali Hajjaj Al-Souissi is remembered as one of Egypt’s most powerful voices of the Quran, admired for his emotional style and unique mastery of Maqamat. His legacy still echoes through radio recordings across the Muslim world. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 76, leaving behind a treasure of Quran recordings for Egyptian, Saudi, and Kuwaiti radio stations. To this day, he is remembered for his heartfelt recitation style and his dedication to spreading the words of the Quran worldwide.
