Ilhan Tok, born in 1937 in Düzce, Turkey, is one of the most respected Turkish Quran reciters, known for his majestic voice, deep mastery of Tajweed, and remarkable ability to perform a variety of Maqamat (melodic modes). At a time when Turkey was more known for writing and preserving the Quran than for its reciters, he emerged as a rare and gifted voice who brought new life and emotion to Quranic recitation in his country.
His professional journey began in Istanbul, where he was appointed as a Muezzin at the Üsküdar Mosque. His dedication, discipline, and exceptional vocal ability soon earned him a promotion to Imam and preacher in 1962. He faithfully served in this position until his retirement in 1981, remaining devoted to the same mosque throughout his career, a sign of his loyalty and commitment to his community and faith.
Even after retiring from active service, he continued his religious work with great passion. He participated in radio programs, authored religious articles, and remained deeply involved in the spread of Quranic knowledge across Turkey. His reputation reached international audiences when he represented Turkey at the International Quran Recitation Competition in Malaysia in 1981, where he received high praise for his eloquence, mastery of Maqamat, and heartfelt delivery.
Today, he continues to serve his faith as part of the Presidency of Religious Affairs in Ankara, at the Religious Education Center for Teaching the Quran and Its Sciences. In this role, he oversees educational efforts aimed at training future generations in proper Quranic pronunciation and recitation (Tashih al-Huruf). His lifelong dedication to the Quran has made him a guiding light for students, teachers, and reciters across the Islamic world.
