Mahmood Ali Al-Banna, born December 17, 1926, in Shobrabas, Egypt, was one of Egypt’s most respected Quran reciters. From a young age, he showed great dedication to the Quran. He memorized the Holy Quran at the age of 11 under Sheikh Musa Al Muntash, and later studied theology at the Ahmadi Mosque in Tanta with Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Salam Al Maliki.

In 1945, he moved to Cairo, where he studied Maqamat and voice sciences with Sheikh Darwish Al Hariri. His powerful and melodious recitation soon gained wide recognition. In 1948, he joined the Egyptian Radio Station, which established him as one of the leading reciters of his time.

He led prayers in several mosques across Egypt, including Ain Al Hayat Mosque, Al Rifai Mosque, and Al Ahmadi Mosque, before becoming the Imam of Al Imam Al Hussein Mosque in 1980, where he remained until his passing.

He also traveled internationally to recite the Quran in sacred places such as Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Umayyad Mosque. In 1978, he was invited to Germany, where he recited in front of global audiences.

He left behind many recordings of his Quran recitations on Egyptian, Saudi, and Emirati radio stations. In 1984, he became president of the Reciters’ Syndicate in Egypt, highlighting his influence and leadership among Quran reciters.

Mahmood Ali Al Banna belongs to a remarkable circle of Qur’an reciters who left a lasting impact on Islamic history. Notable among them are Abdul Basit ‘Abd us-Samad, Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Mustafa Ismail, Muhammad Siddiq AL-Minshawi, Ali Hajjaj Al Souissi, Abdul-Munim Abdul-Mubdi, Muhammad Hassan, Mohammad AL-Tablawi and Al-Husayni Al-Azazi, whose unique voices and mastery of Tajweed have helped preserve and spread the beauty of the Qur’an across generations.

He passed away on July 20, 1985, but his soulful recitations continue to inspire millions of Muslims around the world. His legacy lives on as one of the golden voices of Egyptian Quranic recitation.
