Mahmoud Abdel Hakam was a highly respected Egyptian Quran reciter, admired for his humble personality and heartfelt style of recitation. Born on February 1, 1915, in a small village in Qena Governorate, Egypt, and began learning the Quran at a young age in his village’s traditional Maktab (Quran school). His father, recognizing his son’s love for the Holy Quran, later sent him to the Ahmadi Quran Institute in Tanta, where he mastered Tajweed before joining the prestigious Al-Azhar Islamic Center.

Through dedication and discipline, he became one of Egypt’s most renowned Qaris, known for his sincere voice and unique style that deeply moved listeners. He refused to imitate other reciters, preferring to maintain his own distinct and genuine tone, a voice full of humility and devotion that touched hearts across the Muslim world. His mastery of the Hafs ‘an ‘Asim mode of recitation reflected both precision and emotional depth, making his recordings a source of spiritual peace for millions.

In 1940, he joined legendary Qaris such as Sheikh Mohamed Rif’at, Sheikh Ali Mahmoud, and Sheikh al-Saifi to found the Association of Egyptian Quran Reciters, where he served as the first treasurer. This organization played a key role in supporting Quran reciters and preserving the art of Quranic recitation in Egypt. His tireless service to the Quran and his leadership within this association made him a role model for generations of reciters.

Throughout his career, he traveled across Egypt and many other Muslim countries, reciting the Quran and sharing its beauty with audiences worldwide. For more than 37 years, he devoted his life to spreading the Quran’s message, encouraging others to follow its teachings, and inspiring listeners with his piety, sincerity, and devotion.

He passed away on September 13, 1982, leaving behind a rich legacy. He had eight children, two of his daughters marrying the sons of another legendary Egyptian Qari, Sheikh Mohamed Siddiq Minshawi, linking two great families of Quran reciters.
