Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary (17 September 1917 – 24 November 1980) was a legendary Quran reciter from Egypt, widely respected for his clear and precise recitation style. He was born in the village of Shobra Al Namla, near Tanta, Egypt. He started memorizing the Quran at the age of four and completed Hifz by the age of eight. By twelve, he had mastered the ten Qira’at (modes of Quranic recitation) at Al-Azhar University.
In 1944, he became a member of Egyptian radio, where he was the first to record the entire Quran in multiple narrations: Hafs, Warsh and Qalon. On August 7, 1948, he was appointed as the Muazzin (prayer caller) at Sidi Hamza Mosque, and later became its official reciter. In 1949, he became the reciter of Sidi Ahmed Al Badaoui Mosque in Tanta, and by 1955, he was named the Imam and reciter of Al Imam Al Hussain Mosque in Cairo.
He also led the Quran Correction Committee and served as the Sheikh of Egyptian Quran Memorization Centers, overseeing Quranic education across the nation. One of his most notable contributions was developing a unique method of teaching Quran recitation through repetition after the reciter—a technique that helped countless students refine their skills. His recitations continue to be widely used in Quran education around the world. During his lifetime, he was deeply respected and left a lasting legacy through radio, television, and audio recordings.
Many renowned Quran reciters followed in his footsteps, including Muhammad Siddiq Al-Minshawi, Abdul Basit Abd us-Samad, Mufti Ismail Menk, Mustafa Ismail, Ismail Londt, Mohammad AL-Tablawi and Mohammed Jibreel—each known for their clear, powerful, and spiritually uplifting recitations. In addition, Al-Husary’s recordings with children have helped preserve and pass on this tradition to younger generations.
