Surah Yaseen mp3 by Mohammad Rachad Al Shareef
Mohammad Rachad Al Shareef, also known as Mohammad Rachad Abd Al Salam Abd Al Rahman Al Shareef, was born in 1925 in the historic city of Al-Khalil (Hebron), Palestine. He is remembered as one of the most distinguished and influential Quran reciters of the modern Islamic world. Blessed with a deeply emotional voice and exceptional mastery of Tajweed, he became widely recognized not only as a Qari, but also as a scholar, calligrapher, teacher, and poet. Many consider him one of the greatest blessings to the Ummah in the fields of Quranic sciences and Arabic arts.
He began learning the Quran at an early age and completed his mastery of Quranic reading by the age of eighteen. He was trained by the respected Sheikh Hussein Abu Sunaina, a notable Al-Azhar University graduate, who granted him certification (Ijazah) in the two famous recitation methods: Hafs ‘an ‘Asim and Warsh ‘an Nafi‘. His recitation style was deeply influenced by the legendary Egyptian Qari Sheikh Mohammad Refaat, whose emotional delivery shaped Rachad’s artistic tone and precision. In 1943, Sheikh Mohammad Refaat listened to his recitation and wrote a letter praising him, saying: “I am now listening to the second Mohammad Refaat of Palestine.”
His talent soon became recognized by major figures of his time. In 1941, Mufti of Al-Khalil Sheikh Abdullah Tahboub heard his recitation and sent him to the Palestinian Radio in Al-Quds, where the renowned poet Ibrahim Toukan admired and approved his recitation style. By 1966, he was appointed a Quran reciter at Al-Aqsa Mosque and also recited regularly at Al-Haram Al-Ibrahimi in Hebron.
His contributions extended far beyond recitation. He was an expert calligrapher with mastery in Al-Ruq‘ah, Al-Thuluth, and Persian script, and he was known for his elegant and artistic handwriting. Allah blessed him with multiple talents: he was a Qari, writer, poet, and educator, excelling in each field. He authored the official Arabic language textbook for first-grade students in Jordan, and many of his poems were admired across the region. One of his poems about “the teacher” even became more famous than Ahmad Shawqi’s poem on the same theme.
Over his long academic career, he taught the Arabic language, Quran, and Quranic sciences for more than thirty years at Al-Khalil University and other educational institutions. As a teacher of Tilawah and Tajweed, he trained many well-known reciters, including his son Sheikh Maarouf Al Shareef, the Imam of the King Abdullah I Mosque in Amman and the voice of the unified Adhan in Jordan. He later served as the general supervisor of Quranic schools in Al-Khalil under the Ministry of Awqaf.
In 1980, during the Islamic Conference in Jeddah, the Jordanian Minister of Awqaf invited him to Amman to record a complete recitation of the Holy Quran. This historic recording was later distributed across the Muslim world and became known as the “Al-Hashemi Recited Quran of Al-Quds.” He also recorded the “Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa Quran,” which was broadcast on Jordanian radio and widely loved throughout the region.
He moved to Jordan in 2002, continuing his service to the Quran through teaching, recitation, and television appearances. After a lifetime of dedication, influence, and creativity, he passed away in Oman on September 26, 2016, at the age of 91.
With his calming and expressive voice, Mohammad Rachad Al Shareef is remembered among the notable reciters of his generation. He is often mentioned alongside respected Qaris such as Ghassan AL Shorbagi, Mishary Rashid Alafasy, Muhammad Siddiq AL-Minshawi, Anas Al Emadi, Khalid AL Mohanna, Ahmad Khader Al-Tarabulsi, Akram Al-Aalakmi, Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, and Abdallah Kamel, reciters whose collective efforts continue to preserve the beauty and depth of Quranic recitation.
Today, he is honored as one of the greatest Palestinian Quran reciters of the 20th century, admired for his powerful voice, precise Tajweed, artistic talent, and profound contribution to Quranic heritage and Islamic culture.
