Muhammad Anwar Shahat was a famous Egyptian Quran reciter known for his sweet, calm, and powerful voice. Born in July 1950 in Kafr Al Wazir village, Egypt, he began his journey with the Quran at a very young age. Sadly, he lost his father when he was just 3 months old, and his mother moved back to her family home. It was there that his uncle, Sheikh Hilmi Muhammad Mustapha, helped him memorize the entire Quran by the age of 8. Inspired by great reciters like Abdul Basit Abdul Samad, Muhammad Siddiq Al-Minshawi, and Mustafa Ismail, Anwar Shahat received strong support and guidance. To master Tajweed, he moved to Kafr Al Miqdam and studied under Sheikh Ali Sayed Ahmad at age 10. His teachers noticed his talent and predicted a bright future for him in Quran recitation. He was known for being mature beyond his years. As a young boy, he supported his family by working as a Quran reader, earning very little, but he stayed motivated and dedicated. By his twenties, he had built a solid reputation across Egyptian regions. His fame grew even more with the rise of recording technology in the 1970s. A turning point in his career came when he recited at a religious event attended by Hassan Al Hifnawi, the head of Mit Ghamr city. A Quranic radio station director was also present and was deeply impressed by Muhammad Anwar’s voice. Although his first attempt to join the radio in 1976 was unsuccessful due to a lack of formal training in intonation, he didn’t give up. He enrolled in a private music institute, studied for two years, and finally became a certified Quran reciter on Egyptian radio in 1979. Throughout his life, He served as a Quran reciter at Imam Rafi’i Mosque. He was admired not only for his voice but also for his strong personality and determination. Many later reciters, like Sheikh Nasser Al Zayat, were inspired by his unique style. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 58, leaving behind a powerful legacy in the world of Quran recitation.
