Rogayah Sulong was a highly respected Malaysian Qariah from Terengganu, born around 1942–1943. She became one of Malaysia’s most renowned female Quran reciters, known for her melodious voice, precise Tajweed, and mastery of the classical Hafs riwāyah. Her graceful style, emotional depth, and flawless delivery earned her admiration both nationally and internationally.
She rose to prominence after winning the Malaysian Tilawah al-Qur’an competition seven times, a remarkable achievement that placed her among the nation’s top female reciters. Her talent soon gained global recognition when she secured top honors in the women’s division of the International Quran Recital Competition in 1966, 1973, 1974, and 1978, making her one of the most distinguished Malaysian Qariah on the world stage.
Her contributions to Quranic recitation were recognized through several state and national awards. She was honored with the title “Datuk”, and in 2010 she received the Tokoh Wanita Terengganu award. In 2011, she was further recognized with a Maulidur Rasul state award, highlighting her lifelong dedication to the Quranic arts.
In her later years, she continued to serve the community by teaching Tajweed and Tarannum across Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak, and even in neighboring countries. She played a major role in training and mentoring future generations of qari’ and qariah, many of whom later succeeded in regional and international recitation competitions. Her influence extended far beyond her own achievements, creating a strong legacy of skilled reciters who learned under her guidance.
Rogayah Sulong’s soothing voice continues to be remembered among admired Qur’an reciters. She stands alongside respected names such as Mishary Rashid Alafasy, Abdul Basit ‘Abd us-Samad, Abdullah Ibn Ali Basfar, Maher Shakhashiro, Dawood Hamza, Mahmoud Abdel Hakam, Abdul Mohsen Al Harthy, Khalid Al-Qahtani, and Fahad Wasel Al Mutairi, whose sincere efforts and unique styles help preserve the beauty and spiritual depth of Qur’anic recitation.
She passed away on August 9, 2023, in Kuala Terengganu at the age of 81. Her passing marked the end of an era in Malaysian Quranic recitation.
